The Story Behind Karumparai: A Spice Estate in the Asambu Hills

Nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats, Karumparai is a family-run spice estate that has been cultivating spices since 1984. Located in the Asambu Hills of Kanyakumari district, our estate benefits from a unique combination of altitude, rainfall, fertile soils, and a climate that has supported spice cultivation for generations.

For us, spice growing has never been about producing the largest quantities. It has always been about nurturing healthy plants, respecting the land, and harvesting spices at their peak to preserve their natural aroma and character.

A Landscape Shaped by Nature

The Asambu Hills form part of the southern reaches of the Western Ghats, one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. Abundant rainfall, cool mountain air, and rich forest ecosystems create ideal conditions for growing spices such as cloves, black pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, and bay leaves.

These natural advantages give our spices their distinctive flavour, depth, and fragrance.

From Estate to Kitchen

At Karumparai, every step—from cultivation and harvesting to drying and packing—takes place on our estate. By overseeing the entire process ourselves, we are able to maintain quality while ensuring that each batch remains true to its origin.

There are no intermediaries between the estate and your kitchen. What reaches you is a direct expression of the land where it was grown.

Certified Organic Practices

Our estate follows certified organic farming practices that work in harmony with nature. Rather than relying on synthetic chemicals, we focus on building healthy soils, encouraging biodiversity, and supporting the long-term health of the ecosystem that sustains our crops.

This approach not only protects the environment but also helps preserve the natural character of our spices.

Home to Kanyakumari's Renowned Cloves

Kanyakumari is celebrated for producing some of India's finest cloves, recognised through the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The region's climate and growing conditions contribute to cloves known for their rich aroma, essential oil content, and exceptional quality.

We are proud to continue this tradition on our estate, carefully harvesting and processing cloves to bring their full character to your kitchen.

Looking Ahead

While much has changed since 1984, our guiding principles remain the same: respect the land, grow with care, and share spices that reflect the place they come from.

Karumparai is more than a spice brand. It is the story of a landscape, a family, and a commitment to preserving the traditions of estate-grown spices for generations to come.
